Project Benefits

Northern Crescent is a solar energy project currently under development in Faribault County, Minnesota. The project will provide clean energy, generate new jobs, and provide additional tax contributions and environmental benefits for the surrounding community.

Preserving Rural Lands

Northern Crescent Solar will be constructed on approximately 1,200 acres of rural lands with low-impact solar installation, generating tax revenues through production for an estimated 30+ years. The property owners will maintain ownership of the land and receive lease payments during the project’s lifetime.

Employment and Professional Development

Northern Crescent Solar will bring up to 200 jobs to Faribault County during peak construction periods and full-time jobs to support the ongoing operations and maintenance of the project.

Tax Payments

Northern Crescent Solar is expected to contribute approximately $16 million in additional Property and Production tax payments over a 30-year period. These payments will benefit local schools and provide Faribault County with additional resources that may be directed toward public safety, road upgrades, and infrastructure improvements.

Environment and Grid Resiliency

Northern Crescent Solar will generate up to 150 MWac, which is enough clean reliable energy to power approximately 35,000 homes annually. Electricity generated with solar panels emits no greenhouse gases and no air or water pollutants. The potential addition of a 50 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) would provide consistent, dispatchable energy to support Minnesota’s peak energy demands.

FAQs

When will Northern Crescent Solar be under construction and how long will it take to complete construction?

Northern Crescent Solar is expected to begin construction in 2025. Project construction may be delayed or accelerated based on multiple factors including permitting, the availability of materials, and customer needs.

Once the project starts construction, it will take approximately 12-18 months to complete and begin delivering clean, low-cost solar energy.

How are solar projects safely monitored?

Primergy Solar ensures safe operations. The project will be supervised by a dedicated on-site operations and maintenance team, complemented with round-the-clock monitoring.

Is solar energy expensive?

Costs to operate are minimal because sunlight is delivered free daily.

The cost of solar projects has decreased by 60% over the last decade [1] and in 2020, electricity from solar officially became less expensive than coal and gas [2]. In 2021, 54% of new generation projects installed in the United States were solar [3].
